Fouad Abiad: Doctor's Orders

Fouad has been doing light training since his PRP procedure. The doctor is making sure that Fouad is okay from the PRP & if he's ok, the doctor will give him the green light to start to train hardcore again. Now, the doctor is showing Fouad an ultrasound of his tricep tendons. Next 3-4 weeks, he'll be back to be 100% to train hard again.

FOUAD ABIAD: Fresh Start!

I tossed the idea back and forth for about four weeks now and finally decided that the Olympia is not in the cards for me this year. The Olympia is not the kind of show you hope to show up at your best for, if your not your best then last place is a guarantee.

I’ve decided to focus on the 2012 FLEX Pro and the 2012 ASC. I was very unhappy with the way I looked at the 2011 ASC and I am doing everything in my power to make sure this time I have had off has really healed my injury. I have been in the gym the last week at about 75% and feel really good. The elbow feels like it did when I was 22 and there is nothing more I could really ask for. A lot of people told me “oh that treatment doesn’t work;” I ignored them and went through with it anyway. I couldn’t have made a better decision!

My training partners hate me now. They have been on their own for 6 weeks and I don’t think they’ve been carrying the torch with full force. I got back last week at about 40% didn’t really push too hard but this week was different! I got in there with a vision of reigniting that fire under everyone’s ass including myself. Monday was legs, after we were done both partners told me off and said they wished I was still hurt…lol, I love it! Tuesday was more of the same with Shoulders and Triceps and I plan on the rest of the week being the same way.

No more bullshit, no more time off, no more slacking and rehabbing, I am back and feeling healthier than I felt before the tear. I am ready to blast through all my old plateaus and bring a brand new package to the IFBB stage next year AGAIN!

I have made a change to my diet upon my return to the gym, something new I wanted to try to see how my body would respond. I have always done the high protein, moderate carb, and moderate fat type diet. For the next couple months I am going to try and lower the protein and increase the carbs and see how my body responds. Will I grow? Or will I just get fat? Lol Its gonna look something like this:

MEAL #1
75g Whey
2 Cups Oats Dry
1 Apple

MEAL #2
10oz Ground Steak
2 Cups Rice
¼ Cup Lentils
1 Apple

MEAL #3
10oz White & Dark Meat Turkey
14oz Potato

MEAL #4
10oz Tilapia
2 Cups Rice
1tbsp Olive Oil

MEAL #5
10oz White & Dark Meat Turkey
14oz Potato
1 Apple

MEAL #6
8 Egg Whites
4 Whole Eggs
2tbsp P.B

It’s not too different from what I’m used to but much more carbs for sure. I don’t think it will hurt me in anyway; I will definitely grow, my only fear is that I will get a little fatter than I like but I’ll keep an eye on it.

If any of you are thinking of trying out the diet just remember the protein weights are raw and the carb weights are cooked unless written otherwise. Also remember that I’m weighing in around 280lbs right now so adjust the cals to your weight so you don’t have to stuff yourself daily.

Fouad Abiad: Breaking Plateaus

Flex fans I have three more weeks to go before I get back into the gym and blast through old barriers. I am three and a half weeks into my treatment and rest phase and I go back on July 8th for my clearance to train. I’m counting the weeks and days, can’t wait to get back to the gym…pain free!

I figured since this week I don’t really have anything new to report I would touch on a topic that has been hitting my email over and over again…being stagnant in your programs.

There is no easy fix for this and one of the first things I can stress is whatever you do to try to figure it out you have to do it for more than one week to really know. I suggest sticking to a new plan or routine for at least four weeks before you can really tell how it’s affecting your body.

Nutrition:

The first place to look in your program is your nutrition. Are your carbs too high? Is your protein too low? Are you getting in any healthy fats? These are all things I look for first because generally speaking one or more is usually the problem.

Carbs – The culprit here usually is that they are too low. Most new bber’s are concerned with protein intake to build muscle but they forget the importance of carbs for a pump, sparing protein you’ve eaten and just overall energy throughout the day. So if your not getting 2-3 grams a day instead of reaching for the nearest nitric oxide product try increasing your carbs first and see how it feels.

Protein – The problem here isn’t usually that it’s not enough but more often protein isn’t being ingested often enough or in the right types. Some new bber’s forget when calculating there daily totals that protein from a bagel or rice does not count to your body (unless mixed in the right combo, i.e. Rice and beans). The body needs a complete amino acid profile during a meal for it to help rebuild muscle. So any animal proteins or anything that comes from an animal is always a safe bet. Those are the only things I count when tallying up my totals even if I know there’s more.

Fats – Most new bb’s avoid fats at all costs but for joint, hormone and muscle function fats are a must. Light saturated fats are important but more importantly mono and poly saturated fats like; olive oil, peanut butter, salmon are all foods that contain high amounts of healthy fats.
Training

This can be a complex issue if we want to make it one but I’ll try and keep things simple like I did with nutrition. The problems here usually like in the split and not getting enough rest.
Split – My training split never has legs and back anywhere near each other. They are the two largest bodyparts and most taxing on the body so I like to have a good rest between them. Secondly, not training too many days in a row is important. I like training either two or three straight days, I think anymore is too taxing and will hinder progress.

Volume – This is an age-old debate of whether to do high volume or low volume. I prefer a moderate amount of volume with a lot of pyramid training in my sets. What I can say in some certainty is I think being in the gym for more than 1.5hrs is too much. Eat, get in the gym, kill it and get out.
Supplements

Supplements are important but I listed them last because that is where they fit in my priorities. I think glutamine 2-3X’s a day is important for recovery, a good BCAA/Creatine product before and after training is also important. A REAL whey or casein protein, not one that’s loaded with fillers and lastly never your forget a full array or vitamins and minerals.

Okay that’s a brief rundown of things you should look for if your having trouble gaining new wait. Don’t be scared to try new things, the biggest gains of my career came when I entered the bizarro gym...lol. Everything was backwards and my body really responded. Just remember, any program can make you grow but finding the right one for you is your mission.

Fouad ‘Hoss’ Abiad

Fouad talks about you need to adjust nutrition, supplements or training to break any plateaus. Maybe you're doing something wrong & maybe that's why you're not making the gains you were making before.

FOUAD ABIAD: Toronto Pro Weekend

As most of you know, I have been rehabbing a tear in my triceps tendon and haven’t been training. But I still am focused on my clients, my show promotion and being part of the sport
itself.

Toronto is about 3.5hrs from Windsor, so on Thursday morning I packed up my car with some meals, some clothes and my training partner and hit the road. We got to Toronto around 8pm Thursday night and from then on it was on!

I had a few clients in the show in Figure, Amateur BBing and the IFBB 202 class so I was doing my best to keep them all moving in the right direction. Whoever thinks coaches like Hany Rambod, Neil Hill or Chris Aceto have it easy have to think again. In three days I think I had about 9 meals and slept about 3-4 hrs a night…definitely not good for a bodybuilder and the only reason I was able to justify it was I’m not training hard right now since I’m rehabbing.

My clients did well, including Lou Joseph who took 4th in the 202 class. The show as a whole had some great quality and well conditioned athletes. I haven’t seen a 202 class that big and that deep in a long time; everyone in the class was awesome! In the open guys like Craig Richardson and Frank McGrath brought back old school conditioning to the stage. I couldn’t believe it, at one point I could see striations on Craig in between his oblique’s and his abdominals and I’ve never seen that before. Being there made me want to hit the stage again and not wait for anything.

I could see how hard some of these guys were sacrificing for a win or an Olympia qualification. I talked to Craig Richardson backstage; I asked him what he did to get so shredded. He told me he worked with Jason Arntz and he had him eating 6-8oz portions of meat with very little carbs. For a guy like Craig who weighs about 225lbs solid, that’s not a lot of food. He mentally challenged himself to fight through hunger pains and he was rewarded for it with his first pro win.

Hearing that made me realize that I’m still not working hard enough. One of the privileges of being friends with a lot of these guys is I get to see and ask them what they did to get to the top. When you hear the stories you are able to re-evaluate how hard your actually working.

Are you giving it everything you got or are you just training the hardest in your own gym. I know it’s not too hard to be the hardest training guy in most gyms, that’s not enough for me. Having the praise of the guys in your gym is nothing, the guy that’s competing against you might be training in a basement somewhere all by himself knowing he’s gonna destroy you.

Next time your doing a set of squats, your thinking of leaving because you’ve had it, you slow down because you might puke or you are just plain slacking, think about that other guy. I know a lot of you reading this have shows coming up and I promise you if you aren’t thinking about the other guy and how hard he’s working, he will blow right by you. Being the best in your circle is not enough; you have to think bigger to become a champion. Don’t think like a small fish in a big pond or else when you get to the ocean you’ll be eaten alive.

Fouad ‘Hoss’ Abiad

Fouad talks about being at the Toronto Show not as a competitor but as a coach. He got to sit back & enjoy himself but he had a few clients to attend to. Also, he reflects if he's doing enough to be even better especially when it comes to training & even your training.

FOUAD ABIAD'S VIDEO BLOG

Fouad had a previous injury to his tricep & it got worse before the Flex Pro show. I've never heard of PRP or Platelet-rich Plasma. PRP will help Fouad heal without doing surgery but we'd out of commission for 4-8 weeks. So, doing the Olympia is up in the air now. They give him an ultrasound to see where to inject at. You can see the tear in the ultrasound. You can see the needle go in & out in the ultrasound. Fouad is pain. Now, the doctors will check out Foaud's knees. Wow, Fouad is in agony! As you can see, you need to take care of the body.

FOUAD ABIAD: Facing Fears

It’s been a good week for me. I’ve really turned things up in my training and am starting to get really excited about the Olympia. This Saturday is 19 weeks out and I’m starting my diet at 16 weeks, so its getting closer and closer to that time again where M&M’s will no longer be a part of my life…shitty.

Bodybuilding has really given me everything in life when it comes to material things and also in things that are really immeasurable. Sure I like my car, my condo, I have all the clothes I could want but there is so much more bodybuilding has given me that can’t be seen or felt.

I’ll take you guys back to the scene I’m sure some of you have dealt with in your life. I’m 16 years old, in high school and the assignment is to write a speech and get up in front of the class and recite it; an anxious moment to say the least. It sucked and I was terrified but I got through it, not the right way though. I would get up in front of the class look down at my cue cards and never look up again as I read through my speech as fast as possible till I was done…lol

Fast-forward 16 years, I’m 32 years old now and have had a lot of great experiences because of bodybuilding. It has really taught me to be confident, to believe in myself, that anything can be achieved when focused on hard enough. So last week at the Belleville Health and Fitness Expo I faced my biggest fear since I was in high school…public speaking.
still_5-10-11.jpg
I gave my first seminar last week and aside from a jittery first few minutes I actually had a lot of fun with it. There was 20-30 people there, not a big crowd but big enough to make it worth it. I didn’t want to talk about myself too much so I opened it up to questions relatively early. I wanted the people there to have their questions answered. Anyway, 60min later the seminar had flown by and it was one of the greatest personal accomplishments of my career, not to mention I had a lot of fun with it and it felt to help people starting out.

I guess the point of the story is we all go through challenges in our lives. To us, those things seem bigger than anyone else can imagine, so big that they seem impossible at times to overcome. What I have learned through different experiences in the bodybuilding world is the old cliché: You have to face your fears head on! Every time you avoid something you know you should be doing, you are letting your fears take just one more piece of your life from you.

Challenge yourself, think and be outside your comfort zone and you will feel better about yourself. There subconsciously is a draining effect when you take a pass on big moments in your life just because you are scared to take them on. Every negative feeling stems from a fear somewhere inside us. The way to overcome these fears is to take them on one pound or one step at a time. No one loses 50lbs overnight, they lose a pound here and a pound there until they’ve reached the other side their mountain. The same thing applies to mass gaining or strength; no one goes in the gym and squats 500lbs on their first day so why do we expect ourselves to do that in everyday life? Give yourself the time you need to accomplish smaller goals and one day you’ll look back and the mountain that were facing will all of a sudden be behind you. One day, one meal, one rep at a time…

Later this week, in his VIDEO BLOG, Fouad will feature a selection from his seminar!

Fouad Abiad: The Next Big Push

It was a tough week last week: I came down with a cold that moved to my chest...definitely shitty. So I sat out the second half of the training week and this week I have been treading lightly. I know when you go hardcore in the gym it really gets at your immune system so I decided to train but take it easy so I can let my body take care of this cold. The last thing I want is it dragging on and lingering around affecting my training for longer than need be.

It’s been about two months since the Arnold and I have been training with rest in mind. The volume in the workouts is down, while the rest and food is up. I also really have been heavy on the cleansing supps and anti-oxidants so my body can really heal after a long 18 weeks of dieting (16 weeks for the Flex + 2 weeks for the ASC). Things like green tea, pomegranate juice, and berries of all kinds are the types of foods I have added more of lately.

Since we’re now just under 20 weeks for the Mr. Olympia it’s that time again. My body has had a nice long rest and better yet my mind has had one too. I have taken some time to get my social time in and spend some time with girlfriend, friends and family. I try never to take the smaller things in life for granted because those are the things you miss most when your dieting.

Anyway I am looking at starting the big push to the O but first comes my health. I hit up my doctor last week and did a full physical: Blood work, glucose tests, adrenal function, cholesterol…name it, I’m testing for it. This is nothing new, I do this twice a year to make sure everything is functioning properly and my body is ready for another grueling 16 weeks. I’ll find out at the end of this week if I’m good to go and then its time to get to work.

My goal this year is to be in the top ten at the Olympia. I know I have the potential to be there when I’m at my best. Over the course of the last couple months and this month coming up I’ve been working at getting more roundness to my arms. I think this is one of the things that will really change my physique and there’s no reason I can’t make it happen.

In 2006 people wrote me off and said, “he’s aesthetically pleasing but has no size,” then in 2008-9 they said, “he’s got an upper body to stand with anyone but no legs and no calves.” Now in 2011 they say, “he’s got small arms.” Not a problem, I love the constructive criticism and thrive on knowing that when I am focused and I push myself I can accomplish anything. I put on the size, I smashed legs and calves (a bodypart people write off when not born with it) until I forced them to grow and now they want arms. I can understand that, it’s an arm-dominated generation, Heath, Greene, Centopani, Winklaar and the list goes on; they all have massive arms. I am constantly changing and whether it comes at this years Mr. Olympia or next year’s FLEX Pro, you are gonna see without a doubt a version of Hoss with arms that belong at the top!

I’ll leave you with this. The word ‘decision’ comes from the Latin term ‘to cut.’ The reason they gave the word decision that meaning is because when you make a decision you make a clean cut from everything else. For example, I have made the decision to have bigger arms; I have cut all other possibilities out of the equation. There is no option to that goal, there is nothing else I am committed to, I have made a decision that this WILL happen. How long it takes is a formality; in my mind, I’m already carrying 23’s off each shoulder…

Fouad Abiad: Giving Back to the Local Bodybuilding Community

This past weekend was the first local competition of the year, the Stratford Championships. In Canada that’s a level 1 show (local/regional) and a provincial qualifier (equivalent to Jr.Nats). I like to go to all the local shows in the area, Stratford’s only a couple hours from where I live so I packed some meals, gassed up the Stang and hit the road!

The weekend couldn’t have gone better. The show was a huge success and usually is since it’s the first one of the year. Allmax Nutrition pretty much gave me my own booth, so instead of walking around like I normally do, I set up shop. I put out some of my T-Shirts, DVD’s and pics and just chilled out.

I couldn’t believe the response from fans! I haven’t been to a local event since the FLEX Pro and it was unbelievable the support and response I got from so many local bodybuilders. My favorite part of bodybuilding is honestly just talking to real fans that deal with the same things I do. I always say it doesn’t matter if you’re a level 1 or if you’re a pro, at the end of the day if you’re starving, you’re starving. A lot of people came and bought shirts and to you all I appreciate the support greatly. It was kinda cool, by the end of the night there was an auditorium filled with people and every few minutes I would see someone walk by in an ABIAD’S ARMY shirt, very cool.

Even better than people buying stuff was the constant question of whether or not I was competing at the Toronto Super Show. It is something I have considered but I think after reading Garry Bartlett’s article in a Canadian magazine, I have decided I might sit this one out. Apparently going to all the local shows in the area to show my support and promoting my own show is not ‘giving back’ enough for him. He felt the need to express that myself along with another IFBB Pro from Canada aren’t doing enough. I don’t speak for anyone else, but I will say for myself that between social media, local shows, training athletes from Ontario and now promoting my own show, Garry should know WTF he’s talking about before spouting off.

I can’t let him get to me though, on with the weekend. One of the best parts of the evening was watching big Cedric McMillan tear up the stage and put on a great show for the crowd. Ced’s a great guy and very down to earth, he’s getting ready for a big year and looking awesome. I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish him luck (he doesn’t need it) and let him know I am excited to stand with him on the Olympia stage!

On the training front it has been a slow week. Most of you have been through some type of extreme weather in the last few days and we’re no different up here in Canada. It was 70 degrees last week and this week it’s been snowing…so I got sick. I was able to train Mon, Tues and then I got sick. I don’t believe in training when you’re sick, it’s not hardcore it’s counter-productive. So I’m just chillin working on clients programs and staying busy with promoting my show.
