Next MD Cover: 2013 Arnold Classic Preview!
-
Arnold And MD Make A Great Team!
Muscular Development is honored to be the premier bodybuilding magazine and website. We’re number one and proud of it, and grateful for the support of our readers and the industry. Over the years, MD has assembled a stellar team of writers, editors, top athletes, gurus and legends in the sport to make MD number one. Our lineup of creative talent and industry experts and insiders is unrivaled, bringing to life our passion for the sport and art of bodybuilding to deliver a product that’s second to none!
Arnold is a name that speaks for itself – he’s the King of Bodybuilding and his name brings to mind a magnificence that is larger than life. The bodybuilding contest that bears his name, the Arnold Classic, is one of the most prestigious and respected shows in the industry. MD shares Arnold’s dedication to bodybuilding, his vision and drive to be the best – which is why Arnold and MD make a great team. Upholding Arnold’s high standards, MD is proud to give you the best coverage of the Arnold Classic anywhere, in print and online at musculardevelopment.com.
We’ve devoted this entire issue to the 25th edition of the Arnold Classic (on sale January 29th), the mega-event promoted by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Lorimer. Our coverage of the Arnold Classic gets better each year. MD is pleased to have brought you two world-exclusive interviews with Arnold during 2012, in which he discussed the globalization of the Arnold Classic. Thank you, Arnold, for taking the time to speak with MD.
How will this year’s Arnold Classic go down? Will three-time Arnold Classic champion Dexter Jackson tie Flex Wheeler’s record of four Arnold wins? Or could Toney Freeman, Johnnie Jackson, or Cedric McMillan bring it to Columbus and emerge the champion? In “The 2013 Arnold Classic Preview” Team MD’s Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler, and Kevin Levrone size up this year’s competitors.
Dexter Jackson is the odds-on favorite to win this year’s Arnold Classic. At age 43, The Blade has never looked sharper. Dexter won the Masters Mr. Olympia last December, looking the best he had in his entire career: full, nasty dry and grainy. Can he tie the all-time record of four Arnold Classic titles? Check out our Dexter feature entitled “Dexter: Going for His Most Important Win Yet!” In an exclusive interview with Flex Wheeler, Dexter tells MD how he nailed his condition with the help of IFBB Pro Guru George Farah. Muscular Development recently signed Dexter to an exclusive contract, and we want to welcome Dexter back to Team MD.
The stage is set for Cedric McMillan to do serious damage in Columbus. Fans of shape and aesthetics who long for a return to the ideals of the classic look are rooting for Cedric to score his most prestigious win to date at this year’s Arnold Classic. After skipping last year’s Mr. Olympia to make improvements to his physique, Cedric’s vast potential we saw at the 2009 Nationals is coming to fruition and he won last year’s New York Pro. Check out our super feature in “Armed and Dangerous! Cedric McMillan Aims His Supersized Guns at an Arnold Classic Title.” Find out what Big Mac does to build those large-caliber weapons that could slay the competition at the Arnold. When it comes to traps, there have been some impressive sets going all the way back to Bertil Fox and Markus Ruhl, leading into today with MD’s Branch Warren and Dexter Jackson. But there’s one man whose traps are head and shoulders above the rest. In “Johnnie Jackson Sets His Traps,” learn how Johnnie built the best traps in bodybuilding. At 41, Johnnie is still making improvements and had a great season in 2012, with the third pro win of his career (IFBB FIBO Power, Germany) and three strong runner-up finishes. To say he’s excited about the Arnold would be an understatement.
Also, the “Arnold Era” diet, nutrition, fat loss, and anabolics. Plus in this issue is our special report: Arnold VS. Sergio. Bodybuilding’s fiercest rivalry featured two hugely contrasting characters, so check out “Fire & Ice” as MD senior editor Peter McGough tells the inside story of the titanic clashes between Arnold Schwarzenegger and the late, Sergio Oliva. Don’t miss it!
The rest of the book is packed to the binder as usual – with all the latest cutting-edge research and information on bodybuilding by the industry experts and insiders who make it all happen. See you at the Arnold! - Steve Blechman, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief

MDs NEXT COVER: THE RETURN OF THE CLASSIC PHYSIQUE?
This is a great pic of Dennis Wolf. My version of the classic physique should be Cedric McMillan.

The Next MD cover: Heath Wave.
When Phil Heath stepped onstage at the 2011 Mr. Olympia contest, ousting
Jay Cutler from the throne, history was made. Phil’s rock-hard physique
cast a huge and formidable shadow over the Orleans Arena, raising the
bar a few notches and ushering in a new era of competition. Jaws dropped
as “The Gift” set a new standard for size, shape, and conditioning, and
reshaped our vision of what it means to be Mr. Olympia – like Ronnie
Coleman, Jay Cutler, and Dorian Yates did in years past. We had
officially entered the “Phil Heath era” of Mr. Olympia competition, and
Phil Heath would be the man to beat in the foreseeable future.
At the 2012 Olympia on September 28 and 29, Phil Heath and Kai Greene battled it out and were the clear standouts of the show. Everyone expected Phil Heath to be better in 2012, after knocking King Cutler off the top of Mount Olympus the previous year. Many people had crazy expectations because of his dramatic improvement of the past. The closer Phil gets to his ultimate potential, the more subtle his improvements will be. As Peter McGough, MD’s special Features Editor said, “It’s difficult to improve on a souped-up Ferrari.”
I spoke to Phil a few weeks after the Olympia. He seems more determined to be his best ever at the 2013 Mr. Olympia. Any bodybuilder who plans on putting a stop to the Mr. Olympia “Heath Wave” has his work cut out for him. Phil Heath is a very gifted athlete – that’s why he’s called “The Gift.”
Peter McGough presents a personal, blow-by-blow account of Phil’s victory and triumphant second win. Check it out in the January issue of MD, on sale November 27th.

Next MD Cover: Victor! I’ll be back!
Victor Martinez has had a long and at times rocky
bodybuilding career, and not all of his battles have been onstage.
Victor – the man Ronnie Coleman said has the genetics, structure and
what it takes to be Mr. Olympia – has been up and he’s been down. Victor
almost went home with the Sandow in 2007, and he won the first Arnold
Classic Europe last year. Through it all, Victor has had more than his
share of challenges and tragedies to rise above. Like the true champion
that he is, Victor always bounces back. He has made mistakes in his life
but is a man of great character, and I’m proud to call him my friend.
Victor’s inner strength equals his physical achievements. And that’s
saying a lot.
Victor is making headlines again, and the news is good. He has passed through another one of life’s roadblocks and is locked and loaded to train like the beast he is! Following in the tradition of Arnold, Lee Haney, and Flex Wheeler, Victor has the muscle bellies, as well as the small waist and great shape of these bodybuilding icons. He has the structure and shape to be Mr. O, as Ronnie pointed out. Victor needs to be bone dry and hard as nails. When victor’s conditioning is spot-on, his message to the other competitors is “Hasta la vista, chumps.”
Victor’s amazing story is documented exclusively in next month’s MD in “The Trails of Victor Martinez.” Legendary bodybuilding historian Peter McGough gives readers the whole story, from Victor’s carefree childhood in the Dominican Republic and later struggles with his father, to the glory of standing on the Mr. Olympia stage and almost bring home the Sandow – to time behind bars and finally freedom and a new beginning. This is a powerful, human drama about one of the world’s greatest bodybuilding and Victor’s story is told by one of the world’s greatest bodybuilding journalists – a story you’ll find only in MD.

Next MD Cover: Branch Warren: Bodybuilding’s Greatest Comeback Ever!
Branch Warren’s body has taken a beating over the years and he’s had his share of injuries, but he’s always come back stronger and better than before. His most recent triumph is his biggest ever, and maybe the greatest comeback in the history of bodybuilding.
Going into this year’s Arnold Classic, Branch was the defending champion and the under dog – he suffered a torn quad seven months before the contest, and not everyone in the industry was certain that Branch would be able to recover and pull off a successful comeback in so little time. Branch won his second Arnold Classic – proving that you should never, ever underestimate Branch Warren.
Branch is a great role model – not just for his drive, determination and focus for getting his ass in gear to rehab his leg to win the Arnold, but also for everything that he stands for. Branch is a blue-collar, hardworking family man who puts in the work that’s required to get the job done – and gets the job done. He wasn’t blessed with the best genetics as a bodybuilder, but Branch trained hard and long at Metroflex Gym to be among the best bodybuilders in the world.
Branch’s amazing journey is documented exclusively in the June issue of MD which appears on newsstands May 1st. “BranchWarren: Bodybuilding’s Greatest Comeback Ever!” Mr. Olympia legends, Arnold Classic champions and industry experts – comment on Branch’s inspiring comeback and its significance. Our elite MD roundtable also tells us whether they felt Branch genuinely deserved to win. You have your opinions, but what do Ronnie Coleman, Lee Haney, Dorian Yates, Jay Cutler, Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler, and Kevin Levrone have to say? We’ve also included Branch’s kick-ass workout and diet that brought him to victory in Columbus.
Also this month the king of bodybuilding, Arnold Schwarzenegger, sits down for an interview with MD’s Bob Cicherillo. In a lively and funnyone-on-one with Bob, Arnold reminisces about his bodybuilding career, the Arnold Classic, his association with Jim Lorimer and fondly recalls workingwith Joe Weider.
The rest of the book is packed to the binder as usual, with all the latest cutting-edge research and information on bodybuilding by theindustry experts and insiders who make it all happen. Hope you enjoy the issue. - Steve Blechman, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief
I can't wait to read this magazine!!! Branch thrives on being the underdog & when challenge is coming, Branch is ready for it!

Next MD Cover: Jay Cutler, Bodybuilder of the Decade!
Bodybuilding
is a subjective sport, and sometimes there is not universal agreement
who should take first place or go home with the Sandow. Looking at the
amazing career four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler, one thing becomes
crystal clear – his stunning competitive record has earned him the title
of “Bodybuilder of the Decade.” Jay is a legend, an all-time great
along with Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, Lee Haney, and Arnold
Schwarzenegger. We’re proud to feature Jay on this Month’s cover and
have him as a member of Team MD –and to share his story of supreme
perseverance while becoming the most financially successful bodybuilder
in history.
Bodybuilding historian Peter McGough – one of bodybuilding’s best writers, with over 25 years experience in bodybuilding journalism – looks at Jay’s career in “Jay Cutler: Bodybuilder of the Decade” . The facts are amazing: from 2001 through 2011, Jay competed in 10 Mr. Olympia contests and finished in the top two on every occasion. In all 23 contests he competed in from 2001 through 2011, Jay was either first or second. That level of longevity excellence has never been achieved by any bodybuilder. Through it all, Jay has been a magnificent ambassador for bodybuilding, and has done more for the sport than anyone else.
Like all great warriors, Jay never gives up. His first Olympia victory came after four second places; no previous winner had that “close but no Sandow” runner-up record before earning the title. Jay is the only man to lose his Mr. Olympia title (in 2008 to Dexter Jackson) and return to win it again in 2009. He is the only competitor to win three successive Arnold Classics, from 2002-2004. Those are the stats bearing testimony to Jay being the greatest bodybuilder of the past decade.
Jay is “the” bodybuilder who made the best of inherent genetics, harnessed it with iron willpower and fanatical dedication to beat others more naturally blessed in DNA stakes. He works his ass off for what he wants, and everything he’s achieved thus far, he’s earned. Jay has the genetic structure he outsize’s everybody. As wide as a house and with jaw dropping width, he is thick, dense, and larger than life. Jay’s mass is obvious from his gargantuan, flaring quads, wide back and thick chest.
Jay has the drive and work ethic to do anything. After bicep surgery this past February, he’s looking to return to this year’s Olympia and take home Sandow number five. Can Jay do it? If anyone can come back, it’s him! - Steve Blechman, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief

This is true. Jay Cutler is the bodybuilder of the decade. The only man to finish Top 2 at the Olympia for 10 years in a row. That's impressive all on its own. We saw Jay challenge everybody from Ronnie to Levrone & whomever else in a decade. I'm a Cutler fan & I hope to see him win number 5 this year in Vegas.

Next MD Cover: Evan Centopani and Exclusive Arnold Interview
Evan
Centopani is the young man on our cover this month. Evan has what it
takes to be a champion – vision, passion and drive. Evan is only thirty
years old and continues to pack on the dense, grainy muscle maturity and
improve his physique from year to year.
After placing 4th at the 2011 Arnold Classic, Evan decided to skip the Mr. Olympia and spend more time training and preparing to go to the next level, improving in chest, back thickness and width, and hamstrings so his legs look better from the side. His plan is to win the Arnold Classic! That won’t be an easy task when he steps onstage March 3rd against other Team MD athletes such as defending champion Branch Warren, runner-up Dennis Wolf and three-time Arnold Classic Champion and Mr. Olympia Dexter Jackson. Evan is taking things one step at a time – first the Arnold, then the Olympia.
Evan is a smart guy who keeps improving at every show. He has a vision and plan and he’s going to execute it. Evan is young, and one day he may stand on the Mr. Olympia stage as multi Olympian Champions like Arnold, Lee Hany, Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, and Jay Culter did.
Talking about Mr. Olympians, check out our exclusive interview with the King of Bodybuilding, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold has always done things bigger and better than everyone else. He redefined what it means to be a bodybuilder, raising the bar the world over and exceeding our expectations with his professional achievements that followed his bodybuilding career. So it’s entirely fitting that Arnold Classic and Arnold Sports Festival is the biggest bodybuilding event in the industry. But you ain’t seen nothing yet. Arnold is not content to simply be the best at something – like a true champion and visionary, he wants to take things to another level. The Arnold Classic is going global, with plans for competitions on every continent. His contest is growing and getting bigger - something that Arnold knows a lot about.
Arnold doesn’t grant many interviews, but he talks to Muscular Development and Shawn Ray exclusively this month. Arnold talks about the Arnold Classic, the Arnold Europe in Madrid, Spain and the contest’s continued globalization – with plans for competitions in Brazil, Russia, and China. These contests will bring bodybuilding to fans around the world and will be a true reflection of Arnold’s vision, passion and drive – and like Arnold, larger than life. Thank you, Arnold, for taking the time to speak with MD this month!
The rest of the issue is packed to the gills with feature articles on Branch Warren, Dennis Wolf, Ronny Rockel, Dexter Jackson, Eduardo Correa, and this month’s Major Distraction: “Naughty Nathalia”, IFBB Bikini Pro Nathalia Melo. Also check out the “Phil Health Advantage!” You will be quite surprised! Something none of us suspected! Plus all the latest-cutting edge research and information on bodybuilding by the industry experts and insiders who made it all happen. See you at the Arnold!
Great cover of Evan!!! I can't wait to get my hands on this!!!

Next MD Cover: The Incredible Lou
Only a few of men have become legends outside of bodybuilding, earning the respect and admiration of people around the world and reaching iconic status. Thirty years after appearing in the ground breaking documentary “Pumping Iron,” Lou Ferrigno is still larger than life and the only bodybuilder to compete in the Olympia at over 300 pounds! Lou is an inspiration to millions as an ambassador of bodybuilding and its lifelong benefits, and is renowned across the globe for his achievements as a bodybuilding icon, TV and film star – and second in notoriety only to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The incredible Lou is among the elite group of bodybuilders who helped put the sport on the map. Think of Lou, and you think of a champion a fighter and an underdog who fought for what he wanted and earned his victories through hard work and determination. If bodybuilding had a Mount Rushmore honoring its founding fathers, Lou’s image would be on it – along with Arnold, of course.
In this month’s issue Lou talks to MD’s Shawn Ray about breaking into bodybuilding and his far-reaching career entitled: “The Incredible Lou!” Lou is the only bodybuilder to win two consecutive IFBB. Mr. Universe titles, and the youngest bodybuilder to win Mr. Universe. He appeared with Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Pumping Iron,” which showed the human side of bodybuilders and broadened the appeal of the sport. Then came the role that launched Lou into super-stardom, “The Incredible Hulk.” More acting gigs followed, and in the early 90’s at the age of 47, Lou made a remarkable comeback after being gone from the competitive arena for 17 years. More recently, Lou became a reserve deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
I recently met up with Lou at the Return of The Legends IFBB Pro World Masters Championships December 10th. I had the privilege to hand Lou the first copy right off the press. He was very pleased!

Next MD Cover: Victor Victorious
Victor is on the cover this month as the winner of first Arnold Classic
Europe, and it’s a tremendous accomplishment that an Arnold Classic
champion and Team MD athlete won the first Arnold Classic Europe. Making
the victory even sweeter for Victor was that he received
congratulations from the king of bodybuilding, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Victor— the man Ronnie Coleman said has the genetics, structure and what it takes to be Mr. Olympia— turned things around and is improving and placing higher at each show. He placed fourth at the 2011 Mr. Olympia, up from eighth place in 2010. He placed fourth at the Sheru Classic in India, and many felt he looked even better than at the Olympia. When Victor arrived in Spain with superior size, structure and shape for the Arnold Europe he was armed for battle, and it was a “lights out, game over” victory.
The road back to glory has not been easy for Victor. Victor seemed to be on top of the world again as he traveled to Madrid and became the first Arnold Classic Europe Champion. But his happiness would be quite short-lived. As a citizen of the Dominican Republic and a permanent legal resident alien, Victor had been aware that his green card had expired and had not been renewed. It was only a matter of time before he would be detained upon attempting re-entry into the United States, and this was it.
The exclusive interview in this month’s issue was conducted in a rushed series of collect calls as Victor was being held in the Hudson County Correctional Center in New Jersey. Hopefully in the near future, Victor’s green card will be reinstated and he can get on with his life as one of the world’s best professional bodybuilders.
I actually just spoke to him by phone this afternoon and he told me that if he is released by December 15th, he will compete in the Arnold Classic in March. We are coordinating a letter writing campaign here at MD, on his behalf, and will give you all the information of who to contact as soon as it is made available. We will keep you informed of any new developments on the situation. - Steve Blechman.

When Phil Heath stepped
on-stage at this year’s Mr. Olympia, history was made. Phil’s rock-hard

Jaws dropped as “The Gift” with spectacular genetics set a new standard

officially entered the “Phil Heath era” of the Mr. Olympia competition,

Art Atwood - Official Statement from Busines Partner - NEW INFORMATION ADDED
FitAdina spoke with Steven Salmon today, business partner of the late Art Atwood.
He called MD to set the record straight on a few things being said about the passing of Art.
Steven advised, “Sunday, at about 2:30PM, Art was walking through the pool area of his residence when he had a massive heart attack.
We are not sure if he was going for a swim or just passing through the area, but he was not at a party. He was at the pool area of the condo where he lives.
Two residents who were at the pool saw him fall in and immediately pulled him out. They were able to revive him and get the paramedics, but it was too late. The damage had already been done.”
I asked Steven if Art died there or on the way to the hospital. He said he was unsure, because those details had not been released. He will update us further as the story develops.
Art is survived by both of his parents, a brother and a sister. He will be buried in Wisconsin.
A candle light vigil will be held at his home in Dallas the weekend after the Olympia.
Steven also advised that Art's business, Pro Supplements, will carry on with business as usual, keeping Art's vision alive.
We will continue to update you as information becomes available.
Newest information from Steven:
"Art died at the hospital.
The coroner’s report shows that he died of heart attack.
He unknowingly suffered a minor heart attack about a month ago. As it turns out, heart disease does run in his family."
