Yes, I am a big advocate of shorter rest
periods. However, longer rest periods come into play from time to time
as well to help with:
1) Dissipating the accumulated fatigue substrates (e.g. lactic acid)
2) Improvement of neural conduction
This is especially true during a strength training phase of your
program. Moral of the story? Know your goal, and train accordingly
Continuing with the topic of rest periods, the
length of the rest interval between sets is also a function of the
amount of muscle mass recruited. Giant sets with compound movements will
require longer rest times than giant sets of isolation exercises.
