I touched upon the fact that sometimes you want a more aggressive insulin response from your meals and other times you do not.
Based upon what you want from that particular meal you choose the right food sources and overall meal composition (fats, carbs, protein,
fiber etc . . .)
I'm going to explain ways you can influence this with your meal choices, both ways.
Managing insulin response from a meal:
If
you want to reduce the insulin response of a meal then you want to make
sure you are ticking the right boxes with food choice AND the overall
meal composition especially!
DO the following -
. Include a good source of green vegetables for fiber
. Include lower GI carbohydrate sources
. Include a fat source
. Avoid sugar based carbohydrates
An example for this meal could be steak, spinach and sweet
potato.
This
will help ensure the overall meal isn't going to create a big insulin
response, relative to what other meals may potentially do within your
own body.
Creating an insulin response from a meal:
If
you want to deliberately create more of an insulin response from a meal
then there are also certain things you need to do. Different people
will ultimately
respond better to different things but these points will help achieve a
higher insulin response generally speaking.
DO the following . . .
. Use high GI carbohydrate
. Limit fibre within the meal
. Limit fat within the meal
An example for this
meal could be chicken breast, white rice and mango.
This will help get a higher insulin response from your body over the meal I shared above.
The
reality is there are better times to use certain foods based on your
goals and what you are trying to achieve at that given moment when
consuming a meal.
By having an understanding of how these things work you can then look to create the environment you want
from the foods you are eating at any given moment.
