Muscle activation and recruitment is crucial if you want to BUILD muscle.
When you hear me coach my athletes in my videos you will often hear me say "squeeze" & "contract" which is because I want that person to make the target muscle fall under as much tension as possible.
For beginners, and even experienced trainers and really good training tip is to actually practice squeezing (contracting) each muscle without any weight. This will allow you to learn to recruit that muscle easier when you do train! - Neil Hill
